Parallel Vienna
The proposed presentation focuses on the work of Slovenian academic painter Jurij Kalan, whose distinctive visual language explores the complexity of human relationships through a figurative, pseudo-realistic approach. His paintings and reliefs depict scenes populated by expressive, often slightly distorted figures, revealing psychological tension, emotional states, and subtle social dynamics.
Kalan’s work avoids both strict realism and classical caricature; instead, it develops a distinctive mode of representation that emphasizes character, gesture, and interaction. His compositions function as staged situations in which figures establish relationships with one another within ambiguous narratives, inviting the viewer to interpret underlying meanings and connections.
The exhibition concept at the art fair will be loosely inspired by the thematic framework of Animal Farm by George Orwell, particularly its exploration of power structures, collective behavior, and the shifting dynamics between individuals and groups. While not illustrative, Kalan’s works engage with similar questions of hierarchy, conformity, and the fragility of social balance.
The presentation would include a selection of relief works, potentially complemented by paintings, depending on the spatial conditions of the fair. The combination of relief and two-dimensional formats would create a layered visual experience, emphasizing both the narrative and material qualities of the artist’s practice.
Within the context of Parallel Vienna, Kalan’s work offers a compelling and accessible entry point into contemporary figurative painting, while maintaining a strong conceptual foundation. His practice bridges traditional painterly techniques with a critical reflection on contemporary society, making it particularly relevant for an international audience.
